| kbps | Your modem's speed is measured in the number of bits it can transfer in a second. Modems rated in kilobits per second are now the standard. |
| Kerberos | Kerberos is the security system of MIT's Project Athena. It is based on symmetric key cryptography. See also: encryption. |
| Kermit | A terminal program and file transfer protocol developed at Columbia University and available for a variety of computers, from PCs to mainframes. Kermit can be used to download files from a remote system to your home computer. It is distinguished by its ability to transfer files over Telnet and other connections that would corrupt a binary transfer; it is often available as a UNIX command. |
